FREETOWN, MA—Freetown Police Chief Carlton E. Abbott, Jr. announces his retirement after a distinguished 40-year career, including 25 years as Chief.
Chief Abbott joined law enforcement in 1979, rising through the ranks to become Chief in 1998. His leadership guided the department through various challenges, including recessions, budget crises, natural disasters and a pandemic.
Under Chief Abbott’s direction, the Freetown Police Department achieved significant milestones, including a formalized promotional process, early adoption of TASERS, a cruiser leasing program, new equipment acquisitions, and updated technology.
Chief Abbott’s commitment to excellence led to the department’s police certification, accreditation, and re-accreditation. He oversaw the construction of a modern police station, enhancing community safety.
Beyond the department, Chief Abbott engaged with law enforcement associations, serving on executive boards and influencing policy at the county and state levels.
With an impressive academic background, including a Juris Doctorate, Chief Abbott’s retirement marks the end of an era. The Freetown Police Department expresses deep gratitude for his dedication and countless contributions.
