Retired Freetown police officers who have been appointed as Special Police Officers and authorized to serve criminal process may be used to supplement police resources. They may perform police detail work, traffic control, crowd control and such other duties as may be determined by the Chief of Police.
These Special Police Officers are authorized to serve warrants and processes in criminal cases. They have law enforcement powers to require aid in the execution of their duties in a criminal case, in the preservation of the peace, or in the apprehension and securing of a person for a breach of the peace. They shall serve all warrants and other processes directed to them by the Selectmen for notifying town meetings or for other purposes. They may, when issued a citation book from the Chief of Police in accordance with G.L. c. 90C, enforce auto law violations. They may arrest without warrant any person operating a motor vehicle in violation of G.L. c. 90, § 21. They may arrest without warrant persons violating certain provisions of the election laws.
